In Sonic Frontiers, both newcomers and veterans may be curious about Sonic’s voice actor, as the iconic voice actor is ubiquitous.

Voice actors are often the ones who bring characters to life, and their performance can affect how popular or long-lasting a character is. The fact that Sonic is Sega’s most recognizable mascot is largely due to the fact that he has been voiced by the same actor for the past decade. Prior to that, he had a few, but the consistency of his delivery has always been a strong factor. However, it is not surprising if someone who dives into Sonic Frontiers finds the voice acting a bit off-putting.

Sonic is still voiced by Roger Craig Smith, as he has been in numerous Sonic adaptations over the past decade or so. Roger Craig Smith said he was leaving his role as Sonic last year, but fans asked him to change his mind, so he did. In other words, fans want him to remain as the Blue Blur, but Sonic in Sonic Frontiers may sound a little off because of this.
Roger Craig Smith, Sonic Frontiers

Roger Craig Smith’s voice may be recognizable to newcomers from his roles as Ezio Auditore in Assassin’s Creed, Mirage in Apex Legends, Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil series (2009-2017), and Captain America in a few Marvel adaptations. For veterans, this may be the result of voice confusion resulting from the Sonic Hedgehog movie or the more detailed dialogue in Sonic Frontiers compared to previous games, but the biggest change may be the writing. While some have praised it, it is noteworthy that it sounds like a non-Sonic character.
For anyone who has played Apex Legends, the dialogue of Sonic in Frontiers sounds almost identical to the type of content that would be provided by Mirage. That’s not to say Sonic can’t be funny, witty, and occasionally airheaded, but the dialogue and delivery make Sonic sound like Mirage from Apex Legends. Smith’s versatility is demonstrated by his portrayal of Ezio, Chris, Captain America, etc., but it’s difficult to distinguish between these two characters in terms of dialogue and delivery. Obviously, the same voice actor would be able to draw comparisons, but the fact remains that the majority of Sonic’s dialogue is identical to that of Apex Legends. It is not comparable; it is essentially identical.
Mixing Mirage and Sonic probably wasn’t on anyone’s Sonic Frontiers bingo card, but it’s certainly an intriguing concept. Obviously, Roger Craig Smith’s role in the industry is no less iconic, and he will continue to do great things in the industry long after Sonic Frontiers has concluded. As long as he chooses to be around, so to speak, the Blue Blur’s future may be brighter than ever.
Sonic Frontiers is now available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox One X/S.
