We Are The Caretakers is a strategy-based, turn-based RPG developed by the independent studio Heart Shaped Games. The designers say that games like Darkest Dungeon, Ogre Battle, and XCOM were important to them. As the leader of the Caretakers organization, our mission in the game is to protect the Rauns, rhino-like creatures that generate energy. To do this, we need to create new technologies, talk with other countries, and fight poachers. The game was made with the help of real people who work to protect wildlife and the environment. Furthermore, 10% of the game’s revenue is donated to the conservation of rhinos.
The game takes place in the futuristic, Africa-inspired land of Shadrans. It was cut off from the rest of the planet by a barrier meant to protect the Rauns. These rhino-like creatures generate the energy that powers the entire nation. To protect them, an organization called Caretakers has been established, and we are its leaders.
The game begins when our protagonist begins investigating the bold and mysterious attacks on Rauns. Their future is in our hands.
We Are The Caretakers is a turn-based RPG with strategic elements in which, in addition to combat, we must manage the technological advancement of our organization and its relations with other political groups.
The game allows us to manage the organization of Caretakers. Frequently, we must make political or image-based decisions. Not only are our resources dependent on them, but so is the way we are perceived by our surroundings.
A fundamental component of the game is a technology tree through which we can unlock enhancements for our entire organization and subordinates.
We cannot save the world on our own, so during the game we recruit guards of varying classes and abilities. We are able to form them into teams of up to nine and a half members, and then call them during missions.
Missions are selected at the organizational management level. They are separated into two categories: story and side tasks. The developers have implemented procedurally generated maps, which are intended to keep the gameplay fresh upon repeated playthroughs. In addition to the mandatory objectives, the tasks assigned to us present additional challenges that will provide us with more resources.
Missions can be based on paragraphs (a conversation with multiple options) or exploration. Due to the first type of tasks, we gain a better understanding of the world. The plot and the resources we acquire depend on our dialogue choices. During the mission involving map exploration, we find ourselves in a sectored area of action. Our mission is to investigate the situation, speak with the locals, and accomplish the mission goals. And if you encounter the enemy, engage in combat.
We Are The Caretakers’ battles are turn-based and reminiscent of classic jRPGs. This indicates that our team members are immobile, but have access to a variety of combat abilities. We employ them alternately against our adversaries.
