Deleting Skype is a difficult task, as is typical of online service providers. Given the numerous accounts you will have linked-payment methods, your Microsoft account, and so on-it can be a cumbersome process. But don’t worry. We’ve put together a simple step-by-step guide for you to follow if you want to remove the platform from your online account portfolio.

An important distinction to make before embarking on this liberating journey is whether you signed up for Skype with a Microsoft account or not. If you did, closing your Skype account permanently will also delete the Microsoft account that is linked to it. This is annoying, but your Microsoft account may also give you access to other services from the company, like Outlook.com, OneDrive, and Xbox Live. So, once you’re done with Skype, you need to make sure the accounts aren’t linked so you can still use Microsoft’s other services.
Follow our guide to permanently deleting Skype if you’re on a technology detox or just want to avoid that needy aunt on a more permanent basis.
How to Get Rid of Your Skype Account
- In a web browser, sign in to your Skype account at skype.com.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Account settings from the My Account menu.
- Click Unlink next to your Microsoft account. NB: If the option reads Not linked instead of Unlink, your Skype and Microsoft accounts are not linked, and you can proceed to Step 5.
- When a confirmation message appears, click Continue. Please keep in mind that you can only unlink your accounts a certain number of times. If you receive a message stating that you are unable to unlink the two accounts, please contact Skype Support here.
- Any Skype subscriptions or recurring payments must be cancelled. Navigate your payments in your web browser using the blue bar on the left by selecting the subscription you want to cancel and clicking Cancel Subscription, followed by Thanks, but no thanks, I still want to cancel. NB: If you want to request a refund for any unused Skype subscriptions, this is your chance. Fill out the online Cancellation and Refund form or contact Skype’s support staff via live chat.
- If you purchased a Skype Number where people can call you, cancel it before closing your account. In the Manage Features section, select Skype Number, then Settings, and finally Cancel Skype Number. Your Skype Number will be active until it expires, at which point Microsoft will reserve it for 90 days.
- To disable Auto-Recharge, go to Account Details, then Billing & Payments, then Disable under the Auto-Recharge tab right next to Status.
- By now, all Skype subscriptions and recurring payments should have been cancelled, allowing you to contact Skype Customer Service and request that your account be closed.
- Navigate to the Skype account closure page. Check that you are logged in as the account you want to close. Next, click.
- Select the reason for closing the account from the Select a reason drop-down list.
- Select Close account….and you’re done! However, this is not entirely true, as Skype allows you a 60-day period to consider whether you truly want to leave the video-calling platform. After 60 days, your Skype account will be permanently deleted. If you change your mind and want to save your account from the jaws of the internet abyss, simply sign back in to cancel the closure.
Skype is no longer available.
