It has been a while since I last played a Ratalaika Games game, but the most recent is Ultra Pixel Survive by Gold Skull Studios. The objective is to endure in a pixel art world, as suggested by the game’s name. This is essentially the entire point, so thank you for reading and good night!
… Apparently I’m required to say more about the game, something about a minimum word count or some other nonsensical nonsense. Join me in a pixel world and we’ll see if we can survive.

ultra pixel endure review 1 Ultra Pixel Survive’s presentation is essentially as expected. The game is presented in a side-scrolling, 2D environment with numerous landscape features that can be utilized to your advantage. The graphics are colorful and adorable, and while they won’t make a ZX Spectrum sweat, they function quite well. However, I’m not positive I’m seeing the Series X|S Optimised graphics…
The sound is minimal and quite calming; the sound of axes striking trees or pickaxes slicing rocks floats in on the wind, and the overall presentation is quite lovely.

How about a story, a narrative thread that ties together all of our efforts to survive? No, Ultra Pixel Survive does not feature a significant amount of this. The only information provided by the game is that you have access to a home, a scrolling area to explore, a day/night cycle, and your wits. Where we are, who we are, and what we are doing are essentially clean slates. We are only required to maintain our physical integrity in order to remain alive.
Ultra Pixel Survive is a near-perfect example of a game with two distinct halves. This divide occurs when the sun sets, so it makes sense to begin with what occurs during the day, right?

Well, when we choose our hero and spawn in, we are only equipped with an axe, a pickaxe, and a sword. We must acquire resources in order to survive, so proceed to the nearest tree or rock, select the appropriate tool, and begin hacking. Even though there are enemies during the day, they are weak slime types that are readily dispatched with a pointed piece of steel. The best time to prepare your defenses for the impending night is when the sun is shining, and the crafting interface is simple but effective. You can construct barricades, spikes, campfires (though these have a limited lifespan), etc. If you collect enough materials, you can also upgrade various items, and an upgraded sword can make all the difference.
There are a few distinct areas, such as caves and the like, to discover as you explore, but there is not a great deal of diversity. Ultra Pixel Survive is comparable to a combination of a 2D platformer and Minecraft, although the items you can construct are limited.
Literally, when night descends, the story changes drastically. Remember those defenses I mentioned constructing earlier? This is when they will be put to the test, as in the finest traditions of other survival building games, the bad guys come out to play at night. Even though there is a cot and interacting with it allows you to save the game, you cannot spend the entire night in it. In fact, the timer pauses when you enter your home, so the only way to survive until morning is to engage in combat.
If you’ll pardon the metaphor, the combat in Ultra Pixel Survive is a little hit or miss. As you swing your sword, a stamina gauge depletes, and when it’s depleted, you can’t do anything for a moment, which is typically enough time for you to meet your demise. Each character also possesses a supplementary, more potent attack with a lengthy cooldown. The hero at the beginning of the story, for instance, has a boomerang he can hurl, but it takes some time to prepare, so it is best reserved for dire situations.
However, if you manage to survive until morning, you are rewarded with a chest containing currency, which is used to purchase new protagonists from the menu. Unfortunately, the cost for each hero is quite high, and Ultra Pixel Survive is not quite adequate for the amount of grinding that would be required for all.
As this is a Ratalaika game, by the time you have survived until the third day, the game has hurled all of the Xbox achievements at you, further reducing your desire to continue playing. I vehemently disagree with this strategy, as without a goal, what is the point? However, their marketing strategy has proven effective.
Overall, Ultra Pixel Survive is enjoyable in brief bursts, and establishing a solid defense is quite satisfying. However, despite the low asking price, you may still feel somewhat short-changed. In fact, if you want to play a survival game involving construction, I would recommend Minecraft.
