After playing Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story, my lingering query is “why sausages?” I enjoy the straightforward shoot ’em up pleasures, the emphasis on four-player co-op, and the selection of weapons. But what about the sausage? I honestly do not know what it is doing there.

Appropriate for the week that Advance Wars 1+2 is released, the presentation contains a few Advance Wars references. Re:Boot Camp is about to launch. Everything is presented in bright, primary hues and dense 2D sprites. In Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story, you play as a Sausage Bomber Corps pilot of your choosing. Your mission is to defend Relishtopia from the Killzone-like invaders of Vega Nation.

I was eager for a shooter with a sausage theme. I anticipated that the display would be filled with Bacon Bombers and Salad Spinners as we fired wurst from bap weapons. Despite the fact that every character and region has a food-related pun attached to it, there are few instances of this theme in the primary game. The rare weapon in Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story is shaped like a sausage, but the majority of the time the game is generic. It’s unfortunate because they had a large, sausage-shaped key to solving the problem.

This is our major concern with Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story, and it’s important to get it out of the way early: what and where you fight is oddly unremarkable. We are accustomed to the Giger-esque visions of Gynoug and Gunbird’s fantastical warships. The fact that the only enemies in the shooter Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story are named Mega Train and Mega Helicopter is somewhat disappointing.

But now that that is out of the way, we can get to the good material, which is abundant in Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story. First, it is extremely hospitable. This is a shooter that supports couch co-op for four players, and it doesn’t feel like a raucous slaughter. This is uncommon for the genre and extremely entertaining. The pursuit of power-ups is true when teammates are both helping and hindering.

This hospitable disposition extends to numerous difficulty and accessibility options. You do not need to be a sweaty speedrunner to experience all of Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story’s content because you can scale up the lives. However, there is also a fully-featured speedrun mode with leaderboards and times broken down by level, so you can also approach the game in this manner.

It is remarkable to select your loadout, and shooter fans will feel like children in candy stores. There are dozens of weapons that can be obtained in a variety of ways. You can equip these weapons in one of your ship’s two weapon slots by completing the game on various difficulties, obtaining five stars on each level, and completing other challenges. And yes, some have a sausage motif: we’ll give this one to Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story.

While there aren’t a large number of levels – there’s an achievement for completing the game in under thirty minutes for a reason – the achievements, weaponry, and Cave-like thrill of blowing things up at ever-increasing speeds encourage repeated play. Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story is a well-made, straightforward shooter that encourages playthroughs.

Your little sausage bomber has access to two armaments at all times, and you should select one for air and one for ground assaults. Later weapons can fire in a variety of orientations, and these become useful as well, given that enemies do not only attack from the front. You are alerted by indicators when spacecraft are approaching from above and behind, and you can fire by pressing a button on your shoulder.

It’s a matter of preference, but I wasn’t a major fan of the gameplay’s pivoting nature. I prefer the forward momentum of an R-Type, where everything is assuredly approaching from the front. It feels like you’re two buttons away from killing everything rather than one, and the game can ambush you when you have to reposition yourself and manage the rear. However, you may find it to be less of an issue.

Everything else is mediocre at best. There are numerous enemy sprites to destroy, including hovering mechs, planes that release power-ups, and enormous blimps. They all have the aesthetic of the Colorful Killzone, and you will quickly learn which are the most important to eliminate first. In terms of what they expect from you, nothing is particularly out of the ordinary, but there are more than enough enemy varieties to serve as a buffet before the final boss.

We’ve already stabbed the themes of the managers in the back – honestly, who thought working through the Usborne Book of Vehicles one by one was exciting enough? – and now we’re going to stab them again. However, as encounters they are flawed. Due to their modular design, each component of the Mega structure has its own assault and health bar. This allows you to target and disable the armaments that are causing you the most damage. It leaves you with the gratifying sensation of whittling down a foe to its most pitiful weapons, then picking them off one by one. The leaders don’t always make things simple, shifting and hiding what they can, but they’re still a highlight.

It’s enough to make you forget the neglected sausage garnish left on the counter. Importantly, Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story is an intense shoot-em-up. In addition, it features four-player couch co-op and a vast arsenal of weapons. Despite the odds, Dogfight: A Sausage Bomber Story is a game to enjoy.
