Fans of Mankey and Primeape were probably ecstatic to learn that the iconic Generation I Pokemon would be featured in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Primeape now has a third evolution, bringing its line of evolution in line with those of other Pokemon with three evolutions. This new evolution is called Annihilape. It is a Pokémon that was so angry that it left its body and turned into a Ghost-type Pokémon. Primeape can also evolve into Annihilape with relative ease.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet appear to embrace the concept of evolving certain Pokemon based on unique conditions as opposed to merely reaching a certain level. This concept has been around for a while, but Annihilape’s evolution condition appears to be inspired by Pokemon Legends: Arceus, in which certain Pokemon, such as Wyrdeer, evolve by repeatedly using a certain move.
How Primeape Evolved Into Annihilape
The only requirement to evolve Primeape into Annihilape is to have Primeape use Rage Fist 20 times. Primeape learns the Ghost-type physical move Rage Fist at level 35, only seven levels after evolving from Mankey at level 28. As Rage Fist has only 10 PP, players will need to visit the Pokemon Center at least once to fulfill this requirement. After using the move twenty times, Primeape will evolve into Annihilape after a single level-up.
Evolving grants the Pokemon the Ghost type, so Rage Fist is now even more effective for it due to its STAB bonus. Even though its Power is only 50, this move boosts the Pokémon’s power by 50 each time it is hit in battle. If the player’s Annihilape can withstand a few hits from an opponent’s Pokemon in a single battle, this move can quickly become an absolute powerhouse. This move is comparable to Shadow Punch, which has a Power of 60 and always hits, but has no way to increase its Power during a battle.
Certainly, this is an intriguing direction for the Mankey evolutionary lineage. Few could have predicted that this Pokemon would become so enraged that it transforms into a literal ghost. Because of its unique ability, Annihilape is a great Pokemon to add to any team in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
