There are two methods for activating a free Steam game.
The first method is via email. As previously stated, you will be notified via email whenever you receive a Steam gift. To play the game, follow the instructions in the email. This will launch the Steam Client, allowing you to redeem the gift.

The game will be removed from your Library once you have completed the refund request.

If you’ve received a Steam gift and want to return the favor, or if you simply want to surprise a friend, follow these steps:
Locate the game that you wish to send to another user. It is not possible to send gifts to people who do not have a Steam account.
Click the “Add to Cart” button.
Select “Buy as a gift.” A list of all your Steam friends will appear. If you want to send a gift to someone who isn’t a friend on Steam, you must first add them.
Choose the receiver.
Determine whether you want to send the gift immediately or schedule it for later. To send it later, choose a date and click “Schedule delivery.”
