The winner of the most recent Minecraft mob vote was announced yesterday at the Minecraft Live event. The candidates for the next mob to be added to Minecraft were the adorable Sniffer, the playful Rascal, and the imposing Tuff Golem, for which 3.5 million votes were cast on October 14.
Despite the fact that the roster of potential winners consists solely of friendly mobs this time around, they each have their own unique characteristics. The Sniffer is described as an extinct, ancient species that fed on seeds by peacefully foraging on the ground and sniffing vegetation. The Rascal would be found in the caves and mines of Minecraft’s vast overworld, engaging the player in games of hide-and-seek and rewarding them with useful items when discovered. The Tuff Golem was a community favorite that could hold items while in statue form and pick up items from the ground while roaming.
During the Minecraft Live event, Mojang announced that the Sniffer would be the next mob added to the game, having won just over fifty percent of all community votes. This adorable new creature will use a similar smelling mechanism as the terrifying Warden mob added by the Wild Update, except it will sniff out plants rather than players. In addition, Mojang has hinted that this new mob may also introduce new plants into the game.
Unfortunately, only one of the voted-for mobs can be added to the game, but the Sniffer will add something that all Minecraft players will enjoy. As an extinct species, players must locate Sniffer eggs in the chests of underwater ruins and bring them to the Overworld’s surface to hatch. By hatching the eggs, raising the Sniffers to adulthood, and allowing them to reproduce, players will be able to bring the species back from the brink of extinction and populate their worlds with these adorable new creatures.
Some eager fans have even drawn a connection between the prehistoric Sniffer mob and the scrapped plans to add an archeology element to Minecraft in recent updates. Whether the speculation surrounding this feature will amount to anything in the future or not, many fans are excited about the addition of the Sniffer, which will presumably be included in the upcoming 1.20 update for Minecraft.
Even though Mojang intends to keep the voting process as fair as possible, many players believe that the influence of popular Minecraft content creators can have an unfair effect on the outcome of these events. Regardless, now that the vote has concluded and the Sniffer will soon be added to the game, players can only hope that the Rascal and Tuff Golem will have another opportunity to shine.
