A Minecraft User Creates a Method to Play Doom Without Modifications

A user has uploaded a video of the original Doom running in Mojang’s sandbox game Minecraft, demonstrating that nearly anything is possible in the game. It is a game where there is always something new to discover, which is likely why so many people keep returning to the blocky world. Despite the game’s release in 2011, or 2009 if one counts the earliest versions, it appears that millions of people around the world continue to create new things.

Obviously, the 1993 release by id Software has had just as much of an impact on the industry as Minecraft, if not more. Despite being nearly 30 years old, the classic first-person shooter is still played today. People have actually ported Doom onto a variety of unique devices, including a treadmill screen, a vape pen, an iPod Mini, and a John Deere tractor. Given that other systems can now play the game, albeit sometimes in a rudimentary fashion, it seems almost inevitable that Minecraft will be able to run the game.

The most intriguing aspect of what Reddit user science dude123 has accomplished is getting Doom to run in the vanilla version of Minecraft. This indicates there were no mods involved in the project. According to the user, they were able to use the game’s console command to create their own compiler consisting of 2.3 million command lines in order to make the FPS run. Notable is that, despite being the original game running in Minecraft, it only runs at 1/500th the speed. A video depicting its normal speed has been sped up to represent the game. Regardless, it remains a tremendously impressive feat, especially given that no mods were used.

There has been a previous instance of Doom running in Minecraft, albeit with the VMComputers mod. That in no way diminishes the final product, and it demonstrates that it is possible to get the influential shooter to run on almost anything, including in another game.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, somebody developed a mod that transformed Doom into Minecraft. It appears that the two games are mutually compatible, as well as being iconic IPs that have had significant industry-wide impacts. It will be fascinating to see what other one-of-a-kind creations are made with the vanilla version of Mojang’s game.
