Monday at 3:50 a.m., police responded to a 911 call about an unconscious man in front of a sheet metal factory in an industrial section of the Bronx, according to an NYPD statement. Officers discovered the man unresponsive and without obvious signs of trauma.

According to police, paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. The individual was identified as Vallelonga.

The NYPD stated that Steven Smith, 35, of the Bronx was arrested on suspicion of concealing a human corpse.

Smith told police that Vallelonga overdosed on drugs, according to a New York Daily News report citing a criminal complaint.

The report states that Vallelonga’s driver, Smith, told police, “That guy was already dead.” “He overdosed. I had absolutely nothing to do with that.”

Vallelonga Jr. portrayed Rudy Vallelonga in “Green Book,” a relative of the bouncer Tony Lip, portrayed by Viggo Mortensen.

Nick Vallelonga, the brother of Vallelonga Jr., wrote the 2018 film. The film is based on the life of their father, the white Italian American bouncer Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga, who was hired in 1962 to protect the black pianist Don Shirley as he toured the Jim Crow South.

Nick Vallelonga won an additional Academy Award for original screenplay, while Mahershala Ali won for his portrayal of Shirley. Vallelonga Jr. had appeared in supporting roles in other films directed by Nick Vallelonga in the 1990s, as well as in the 2021 crime thriller “The Birthday Cake.”

According to a report in the Daily News, police said surveillance footage captured the moment Vallelonga Jr.’s body was dumped on Monday. The report says that Nick Vallelonga’s car, which had a New Jersey license plate, was at the scene of the crime.
