FAQ Your biggest Pokémon Scarlet and Violet questions, answered

A list of frequently asked questions for the latest installment in the Pokémon franchise.

The newest Pokémon game in the series, Pokémon Scarlet and brings trainers to the Paldea region, which is filled with new and familiar Pokémon.

The game borrows heavily from Pokémon Legends: Arceus, including the ability to view Pokémon on the map and to teach your Pokémon moves from a menu as opposed to a move tutor.

GameFreak also advertised that you could complete content in any order you choose, though this is not entirely accurate. The game is enormous and can be intimidating, so we’ve compiled some of the initial questions we had (and that we saw online) and answered them here.

HOW LONG IS POKÉMON SCARLET AND VIOLET?

As of this writing, I have spent 27 hours playing the game. I have completed the entire main storyline and have seen the credits roll. I have also captured roughly one hundred Pokémon, but I have yet to capture any post-game legendary Pokémon or rematch with gym leaders. – Julia Lee

HOW LONG DOES THE NINTENDO SWITCH BATTERY LAST WHEN PLAYING POKÉMON SCARLET AND VIOLET?

I was able to play on my OLED Nintendo Switch for six to seven hours at maximum brightness before having to plug it in. — Nicole Carpenter

DOES POKÉMON SCARLET AND VIOLET HAVE LEVEL SCALING?

Nope. If you wander around aimlessly, you will encounter Pokémon of both higher and lower levels.

MAY I REALLY DO WHATEVER I WANT IN ANY ORDER?

Sort of. You can complete tasks in any order, but you must defeat at least one Team Star base before you can explore the entire map, as the northern portion of Paldea is inaccessible from both the east and west sides.

Before you can access certain areas, such as small islands and high cliffs, you must find Herba Mystica by defeating Titan Pokémon. By feeding your mount Herba Mystica, they will learn new traversal skills.

SHOULD I DO VICTORY ROAD, STARFALL STREET, OR PATH OF LEGENDS FIRST?

The sad and mundane answer is that you should perform all of them simultaneously. If you only battle in gyms or against Titan Pokémon, there will be significant level jumps between battles. However, if you mix the content together, you’ll notice that the levels flow together quite well.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED ORDER FOR GYM, TEAM STAR, AND TITAN POKÉMON?

You can generally go out of order if you want to spice things up, but if we were to rank all of the challenges by level, they would be as follows:

Cortondo (bug) Artazon (grass) Levincia (electric) Cascarrafa (water) Medali (normal) Montenevera (ghost) Alfornada (psychic) Glaseado (glass) (ice)
Dark Crew Fire Crew Crew Fairy Crew Fighting Crew
Titan Stony Cliff Titan Open Sky Titan Lurking Steel Titan Quaking Earth Titan Fake Dragon. Titan
DO YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO SEE SHINEY POKÉMON BEFORE YOU ENCOUNTER THEM?
Yes, if a Pokémon is shiny, it will appear to you as such, so you don’t have to battle every Pokémon you encounter to determine its status.

IS GAME TIME CONSISTENT WITH REAL TIME?

Yes, but also no Raids and mass outbreaks change at midnight based on your Nintendo Switch’s time. (At least, it occurred nightly for us on the dot.)

However, the game’s weather and day/night cycle do not use the Nintendo Switch’s clock. It may be daytime outside, but it is nighttime within the game. The weather will also come and go randomly, as opposed to being locked to a full day as it was in Sword and Shield.

ARE TMS one-time-use items in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?
Yes, but you can create additional TMs at Pokémon Centers using the materials Pokémon drop after being battled or captured.

SHOULD I BE SPENDING MY REGULAR MONEY OR MY LP?

You can spend LP (League Points) in place of currency on anything, but you need LP to create TMs. However, if you have all the TMs you desire, you may spend your LP as you see fit. If you are desperately in need of healing items or Poké Balls and are running low on cash, you may also use LP funds. a

HOW HIGH SHOULD MY LEVEL BE BEFORE I BEGIN THE ELITE FOUR?

You ought to be around level sixty. You can likely defeat it with Pokémon of level 55 if you have effective counters, but to be safe, we recommend Pokémon of level 60 or higher.

CAN YOU FIGHT THE ELITE FOUR ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS?

True, the rumor you may have heard. The Elite Four cannot be fought a second time in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find challenging fights to earn late-game experience.

After defeating the Elite Four and completing all other questlines, you will be able to return to each gym and rematch the trainers there. They will have Pokémon with higher levels (around level 60 or a bit higher). After completing the circuit, you will receive an invitation to the Academy Ace Tournament mentioned earlier in the game. This will pit you against four different academy opponents, both students and instructors, in a tournament-style battle. It appears that these opponents may vary each time: During my initial run, I fought Arven, Mr. Jacq, Ms. Dendra, and Geeta. Each of them had teams between levels 60 and 70.

After completing this, you can re-enter the tournament from the academy desk. — NC

WHEN WILL PARADOX POKÉMON BE AVAILABLE IN SCARLET AND VIOLET?

After completing all three routes (Victory Road, Starfall Street, and Path of Legends), you can catch Paradox Pokémon, bizarre new Pokémon from the past and future that are related to existing Pokémon, in The Great Crater. Initially, only a few Paradox Pokémon will appear in the crater, but after the credits have rolled, the rest will appear.

ARE THERE POST-GAME CONTENT OPTIONS FOR POKÉMON SCARLET AND VIOLET?

There are more legendary Pokémon to capture and gym leaders to rematch, but there is no “battle tower” system in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. However, there is a strong conclusion. As previously stated, once you have rematched each gym leader, the Academy Ace Tournament will begin at the school. These four battles, which are likely random, introduce players to school students and faculty of a higher level.

Additionally, there is more to do elsewhere in the world, which involves exploring the map to find these four chained-up shrines/gates around Paldea. We have located these shrines, but we have not yet unlocked their contents, which are likely new Scarlet and Violet Pokémon. Part of this process involves locating and activating all of these stakes around Paldea. (You may also encounter these before “officially” reaching post-game content.) After that, we are unsure of what will occur, but we will keep you informed as we progress through the post-game.

MAY I TRANSFER POKÉMON FROM POKÉMON HOME TO SCARLET AND VIOLET?

At the time of writing, no. In the spring of 2023, compatibility between the app and new games is anticipated. You will be able to transfer specific Pokémon between the two games using Pokémon Home. In addition to the 400 Pokémon listed in the regional Paldea Pokédex, you can transfer a few others, such as Hisuian Zorua and Kleavor.

HOW DO POKÉMON SCARLET AND VIOLET RUN ON NINTENDO SWITCH?

There are significant performance issues with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as of this writing. There are many visual problems, such as objects clipping through the world, too many characters and Pokémon popping up, and frame rate issues. Occasionally, we have also experienced crashes at crucial times. Except for the crashing, the visual issues aren’t severe enough to impede gameplay, but you’ll have to decide if you can play through them.

Overall, it is evident that the Nintendo Switch’s aging hardware had an effect on the game’s size and scope.
