Roblox, the game creation system created and distributed by Roblox Corporation, has been steadily gaining in popularity since its PC debut in 2006. In fact, the game has become so popular that in 2020 it was revealed that more than half of US children under the age of 16 played Roblox, and in 2021 Roblox Corporation overtook Activision Blizzard to become the most valuable gaming company.
When a player dies in Roblox, they make a distinctive grunting sound, which has become the subject of countless memes over the years and can even be heard reverberating from playgrounds during recess. In 2020, this iconic “oof” sound was temporarily removed from Roblox and appeared to be at risk of disappearing permanently after the sound’s original creator, Tommy Tallarico, discovered it was being used without his consent. Later, he reached an agreement with Roblox Corporation to keep “oof” in the game.

However, it appears that the agreement between Roblox Corporation and Tallarico has expired, or perhaps its terms have reached a predetermined conclusion. Roblox has announced that the well-known “oof” sound will no longer be available; instead, players will hear a new default sound when they die. Additionally, the company stated that its future plans for Roblox include allowing players to add sounds by licensing them directly from their creators. In the future, it may even be possible to customize character avatars similarly to clothing.
This is not the first time that Roblox Corporation has encountered licensing and creative disputes. Since Roblox is a platform that allows users to both create and play games created by others, some content of questionable quality has made its way onto the platform. In April, a Roblox developer reportedly created a game that included footage from Kim Kardashian’s infamous sex tape. Unfortunately, the influencer’s son Saint discovered the game, prompting Kim Kardashian to threaten legal action against Roblox.
Similarly, the developer has also been on the opposite end of the spectrum. Roblox Corporation filed a lawsuit against Ruben Sim, a YouTube personality, in November 2021. The content creator Benjamin Robert Simon has been banned from playing Roblox for several years. In retaliation, Simon allegedly led a “cybermob” and incited “illegal acts designed to harm Roblox and its users,” according to the lawsuit. In addition, he was accused of hacking the platform and making threats of terrorism. Roblox Corporation was seeking $1.6 million in damages; however, the case was settled out of court, and Simon was not required to pay any money.
