Every Pokemon that wasn’t in Scarlet and Violet when they came out

When it comes to the final in a new Pokemon game, not every Pokemon makes the cut, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are missing over 600 Pokemon.

Every Pokemon that wasn’t in Scarlet and Violet when they came out

With the number of Pokemon surpassing 1,000, not every Pokémon can be included in a new Pokémon game, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are no exception. While the games feature a Regional Pokedex of 400 Pokemon, both new and returning, this means that a large number of Pokemon were omitted from the latest generation of Pokemon games – at least for the time being, until possible DLC releases are made in the future. There are 605 Pokemon from previous generations that can’t be caught at launch. However, when the service is updated in early 2019, some of them will be available through Pokemon Home transfers.

Several of the eight preceding generations were more heavily favored than the others. Unova (Generation Five) had the lowest percentage of returning Pokemon in Generation Nine thus far, while Galar (Generation Eight) had the highest. The Paldea Region of Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet is based on Spain, so it makes sense that the regions based on Spain’s neighbors would also share a large number of Pokemon, as Galar (the United Kingdom) and Kalos (France) are among the regions with the highest proportion of returning Pokemon.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation One’s Missing Pokémon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet may disappoint fans of the Kanto region’s original 151 Pokemon. Only 43 of the original 151 Pokemon are currently available in Generation Nine, a staggering 66% are absent from the current generation, and only nine will be transferable via Pokemon Home in early 2019. If players miss the first Tera Raid Event, which features a unique Charizard with the Dragon Tera Type, they can only obtain the legendary Charizard evolution line via transfer. Other notable Pokémon such as Alakazam, Snorlax, and Porygon are missing from the Paldean Pokedex. The complete list of missing Pokemon appears below:

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation Two’s Missing Pokémon

Johto does not fare as poorly as Kanto in terms of missing Pokemon, but a significant portion of Johto Pokemon are still missing from Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. 58 of the 100 Pokemon introduced in Generation Two are missing from Scarlet and Violet’s base game. Beginning early next year, only three Pokemon from the Cyndaquil evolutionary line are transferable via Pokemon Home. This is likely due to the fact that all Hisuian Pokémon, including Hisuian Typhlosion, are available for Pokemon Home transfer. Here are the Pokemon currently missing from Johto:

Chikorita \sBayleef

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation Three’s Missing Pokémon

Hoenn introduced an additional 135 Pokemon to the National Pokedex, and similar to Kanto, a significant number of these Pokemon are absent from the current generation. Only 42 of the 135 Hoenn Pokemon are catchable, and three more will be available for transfer in the future. Shedinja, a Pokemon that is absent from the roster, would have rendered competitive battles an absolute nightmare. The introduction of terastallization may render Shedinja invulnerable. Despite the fact that nearly 70% of Hoenn’s Pokémon are absent, some fan favorites and powerful Pokémon made the cut. The missing Hoenn Pokemon are as follows:

Treecko
Grovyle \sSceptile

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation Four’s Missing Pokémon

Compared to Kanto and Hoenn, Sinnoh fared surprisingly well in terms of Pokemon extinction, with just under half of the region’s Pokemon extinct. Many of the special evolution Pokemon added in this generation, such as Dusknoir, Electivire, and Magmortar, are absent in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, so players do not need to worry about tracking down so many evolutionary items in addition to learning the new evolution mechanics. The Sinnoh Pokemon currently missing are as follows:

Turtwig
Grotle

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation Five’s Missing Pokémon

In Scarlet and Violet, 78% of Unova’s original roster was missing. 122 of the 156 Pokémon introduced in Generation Five were eliminated, and only seven of those 122 will be added via Pokemon Home transfer in the future. While some fan-favorites made it to the Paldea Region, including Bisharp, who also received a cool new evolution, many fan-favorites from the past did not. As with the other base forms of Hisuian starters, the Oshawott line and the Forces of Nature – Thundurus, Tornadus, and Landorus – are transferable. Here are all the currently-missing Unova Pokemon:

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation Six’s Missing Pokémon

Kalos fared quite well against the beginning-of-generation Pokemon purge. Despite the fact that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are missing 44 of the 72 Pokemon introduced in Generation Six, 13 of them will be transferable once Pokemon Home support arrives. Several powerful Pokemon from the Kalos region are featured in Scarlet and Violet, and if fan speculation is to be believed, additional Kalos-region Pokemon may be introduced in future DLC. It is rumored that Kalos is located to the northeast of the Palean Region map, much like France is to Spain’s northeast. Here are the 31 Kalos Pokemon currently missing:

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: Generation Seven’s Missing Pokémon

If fan understanding of Pokemon geography is to be believed, the Alola Region is located quite a distance from Paldea, which makes sense given the number of Alolan Pokemon missing from Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. Seventy-two percent of the 88 new Pokemon introduced in Alola are either missing or transfer-only at the moment. 59 are completely absent, while 4 will become available via transfer in the future. In light of the absence of Paldean forms, the absence of Alolan forms is quite surprising. Here are the Alolan Pokemon currently absent:

Pokemon missing from Generation Eight

Prior to Scarlet and Violet, Pokemon Sword and Shield were the most recent mainline additions to the franchise, and the Paldea Region currently contains only 33 percent of the Generation Eight Pokemon. Due to the large number of transfer-only Pokemon that will be accessible in Pokemon Home, this percentage increases to 55 percent. Some Gen 8 fan favorites return, including Dragapult, one of the Pokemon Violet-exclusive Pokémon.

What’s up with Hisui?

Hisui is an odd case in comparison to the other generations. With the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, not many new Pokemon were introduced, though several regional forms were added. All seven brand-new Pokémon are transferable through Pokemon Home. In addition, all Hisuian forms can be transferred into the game. As with Sword and Shield, if players breed a Hisuian form holding an Everstone, the resulting Egg will also be a Hisuian form. At this time, it is unknown if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will receive the necessary evolutionary items for Ursaluna and Kleavor so that these Pokémon can be obtained without transferring. The newly introduced Pokemon in Hisui are:

Wyrdeer (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
Kleavor (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
Ursaluna (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
Basculegion (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
Sneasler (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
Overqwil (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
Enamorus (Transfer Only) (Transfer Only)
In Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet, all Pokémon from previous generations are now present. There are a total of 905 Pokemon from previous generations, of which 530 are absent, 75 are Transfer-Only, and 300 return in Scarlet and Violet. Following the Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC, 231 Pokemon from that generation were missing from the Pokedex, so it is possible that Scarlet and Violet will continue to expand the Pokedex through DLC in the future, much like Sword and Shield did.
