If you are one of the unfortunate few whose account has been hacked, don’t freak out.

We’ll walk you through the steps you need to take to secure your account and get it back up and running in this article. So, whether your account has been compromised or you simply want to stay ahead of the game, keep reading!
When Steam is Hacked, What Should You Do?
Steam, like any other modern online platform, is vulnerable to hackers. Indeed, several reports have surfaced of people having their accounts hacked and being unable to access their games or information.
Hackers with access can do serious damage, such as deleting games, changing account information, and stealing personal information. They can even take your games and sell them on the black market.
So, what should you do if your Steam account is compromised?
Start an anti-virus program. Immediately
When you realize something is wrong with your Steam account, you must act quickly to limit the damage and protect your data.
One of the first steps you should take is to scan your system for malware with an anti-virus program. Malicious software is frequently used by hackers to gain access to your account and steal sensitive information. An anti-virus program can assist in detecting and removing this malware, thereby protecting your computer from further harm.
Furthermore, running an anti-virus scan can assist in identifying any other files or programs that the hackers may have compromised. It can also help protect your device from future unauthorized access attempts.
When selecting an anti-virus program, don’t be too concerned with the specific tool you select at the time. Despite some controversy, Avast, Bitdefender, and Norton Security all perform admirably. All three services also provide free trials, so you can always cancel as soon as your Steam account is no longer in trouble.
Alter Your Password
Changing your password on a regular basis is always a good idea, but it’s especially critical if you suspect your account has been compromised. After all, if a hacker already has access to your account, they will know your current password or know how to circumvent it. However, because your password is linked to your email address or phone number, you will always have the upper hand.
Here’s how to change your Steam password:
1.Sign in to your Steam account using your preferred browser.
2. Select “Settings” from the dropdown list after clicking on the Steam menu in the top right corner. This should launch the Settings dialog box, which displays your username, email address, VAC status, and security status.
3. Select “Change Password.” This should open a second dialogue sub-window in which you can select how you want to change your password.
4. Select “Email an account verification code” if you still have access to the email address associated with your account.
5. At this point, open a new window in your email client and retrieve the code sent by Steam.
6. Return to the original window, enter the code in the provided field, and click the “Continue” button.
7. Fill in the new password twice in the provided fields, then click “Change Password.”
Once you’ve successfully submitted your new password, all active logins, including any hackers who may have breached your account, will be logged out. You must log in again with your new password.
Your new password should be strong in order to eliminate any vulnerabilities that the hackers may have used to gain access to your account. Regarding this:
- The bare minimum is eight characters, but twelve or more is preferable. The more difficult it is for someone to crack your password, the longer it is.
- Your password should be a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. This makes it much more difficult for hackers to guess your password using brute force methods.
If the hacker has locked you out of your account, you can still reset your password using the instructions below:
- Navigate to the Steam login page and select “Forgot Your Password?”
- Click the “Search” button after entering your username and the email address associated with your account.
- “Email an account verification code” should be selected.
- In a new tab, open your email account and copy the code sent by Steam.
- Return to Steam, enter the code in the appropriate field, and press the “Continue” button.
- Enter your new password and press the “Change Password” button.
Please contact Steam Support.
If you’ve been locked out of your account and are unable to change your password because you no longer have access to the email address associated with your account, contact Steam Support right away.
Here’s how it’s done:
- Go to the Steam homepage and press the login button in the upper right corner.
- At the bottom of the page, click “Forgot your password?” This should take you to the Steam support page, which lists various account access issues.
- Select “My Steam account was stolen, and I need assistance recovering it.” 4. This should take you to a page with general security tips for your account.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Reset my password” button.
- Enter your account’s email address or phone number and press the search button. Steam’s algorithms will now conduct a background search for your account.
- If your Steam account is not found, you will be prompted to search again, this time using your account name. Choose “Search using my account name.”
- Type your account name into the search box and press the search button.
- If Steam still can’t find your account, you’ll be prompted to try a different email address or account name. Enter this information and press the “Search” button.
- If there is still no trace of your account at this point, you will be given the option to open a support ticket. To do so, select “you can contact Steam Support by clicking here.”
- Complete and submit the provided form. Steam Support will contact you using the email address you provide on the form.
Depending on the volume of requests received, it may take up to a day for Steam Support to respond.
What To Do if Items Were Stolen From Your Account
If you’re unlucky, hackers will breach your Steam account and cart away your purchases, including games and in-game items such as skins and weapons. But is there a way to get these items back?
Sadly, there isn’t. According to Steam Support, the platform doesn’t restore lost items because possession of such items changes hands several times before the original owner lodges a restoration request.
Steam considers it extremely difficult in these circumstances to restore the items without duplication or unfair removal of the items from another innocent gamer’s account. They argue, in particular, that duplication would reduce the value of the items, harming all traders on the platform.
It is important to note, however, that each situation is unique, and you should never rule out recovering your items. If you discover that your items have gone missing, you should contact Steam support right away. The sooner you do this, the better your chances of getting your inventory back.
Protect Your Account Selfishly
With over 125 million users, Steam is one of the most popular gaming platforms in the world. Unfortunately, this makes it an attractive target for hackers. A hacked Steam account can result in the theft of money, games, and other items. This can be exasperating and upsetting.
If this happens to you, you should try to change your password as soon as possible. If you are unable to do so, you should open a support ticket and speak with a Steam Support representative.
What if your account hasn’t yet been hacked but you want to stay ahead of the game?
To begin, never use the same password for multiple accounts. If a hacker gains access to your Steam account, they may also gain access to your other accounts. That is why it is critical to use a different password for each of your online accounts.
Second, ensure that your password is strong. A strong password is at least eight characters long and contains a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using words that are easily guessed, such as “password” or your birthday.
Finally, turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) for your account. Every time you log in, you will be required to enter a code from your phone or an authenticator app, making it much more difficult for hackers to gain access to your account.
Finally, exercise caution when disclosing personal information online. Social engineering techniques can be used by hackers to trick you into disclosing sensitive information such as your password or date of birth. So proceed with caution.
