Manchester United has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo’s immediate departure from the club.

Cristiano Ronaldo is leaving Manchester United

After an explosive interview with Piers Morgan in which he criticized Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag, Ronaldo, who is 37, and the club have agreed to end his contract.

The club issued a statement on Tuesday that read: “Cristiano Ronaldo has mutually agreed to leave Manchester United with immediate effect.

“The club thanks him for his immense contribution during his two stints at Old Trafford, during which he scored 145 goals in 346 appearances, and sends him and his family its best wishes for the future.

Everybody at Manchester United wants the team to keep getting better under Erik ten Hag and do well on the field.

According to sources who spoke to ESPN, Ronaldo wanted to leave, but United did not pay him to do so.

Ronaldo’s contract at Old Trafford was set to expire in June, but Manchester United attempted to terminate it early after the forward told Morgan that the club had made “zero progress” since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 and that he “doesn’t respect” Ten Hag.

Ronaldo, who rejoined United from Juventus in 2021, stated in a simultaneous statement that it was “time for a new challenge.” He said: “Following discussions with Manchester United, both parties have agreed to terminate our contract early.

“I adore Manchester United and its fans, and that will never change. Nonetheless, I believe it is time for me to seek a new challenge.

I wish the team continued success throughout the rest of the season and into the future.

Ronaldo is currently in Qatar preparing for his first World Cup match, with Portugal facing Ghana on Thursday.

He will not have to wait until the January transfer window to join another club after departing from Old Trafford.

United wanted a quick solution, and ESPN heard from sources that they were ready to sue for breach of contract if they couldn’t get out of the deal on their own.
