How to Play Steam Games on the Oculus Quest 2

SteamVR games can be played on the Oculus Quest 2.

This guide to playing SteamVR games on the Oculus Quest 2 is divided into sections based on the various types of connections available. Use the table below to jump to the appropriate section based on whether you prefer the wired or wireless method.

What You Will Need for SteamVR on Oculus Quest 2

While running SteamVR games on the Quest 2 is simple, there are a few prerequisites you should be aware of. Some of these are critical, so read them thoroughly before proceeding.

A VR-Ready Computer

It goes without saying that running virtual reality games and applications necessitates a significant amount of graphical and processing power. This requirement may be higher depending on the type of games you intend to play. The Oculus app, the software that allows you to play PC games on your Quest 2, has some requirements. You can check Facebook’s official Quest 2 compatibility page to see if your system is compatible. Also, keep in mind that as time passes, these requirements may change.

The Oculus App

Facebook has its own VR software suite that works in tandem with the Oculus Quest 2. The software, dubbed Oculus, is in charge of getting your Quest 2 up and running on the PC. So, if you want to play SteamVR games on your Quest 2, the Oculus app is your best bet. You can install Oculus Link by downloading it for free. Sign in with your Facebook account because the headset will use it. Gamers looking for a wireless option should also get this.

Oculus Link Cable or Other Type C Fast Cable

A cable is required for Oculus Quest 2 users who want to connect their VR set to a PC for Steam. If you’re willing to spend the money, the official Oculus Link Cable ($79) is the best option. It is a fast and long transmission cable that allows you to walk around with your set while it is connected to the PC. If that appears to be too expensive, you can simply purchase a compatible Oculus Quest 2 cable that supports high data and video transfer. Furthermore, ensure that the cable you do purchase is sufficiently long (15ft or more) so that you do not feel restricted while playing. Many good cables can be found online.

Setting up SteamVR on a PC

Last but not least, we will require SteamVR (Free) to make things happen. The SteamVR software can be found in the Steam Store and is relatively small in size. Simply let it install after downloading and continue reading. It will be required later in the process. Also, ensure that any VR games you’ve purchased have been installed and are ready to play.

How to Install Quest 2 on SteamVR Games (Wired)

  1. As soon as you connect your headset, you will be inundated with permission requests. Accept the option to enable Oculus Link and grant them all.
  2. The add a device menu will appear on your PC’s Oculus Software. Click on ‘Link (Cable)’ and then ‘Continue.’
  3. Because our headset is already connected, simply click ‘Continue.’
  4. The following step allows you to test your cable connection. If you’re connected via the Oculus Link cable or another good one, you can skip this step and proceed. Otherwise, click the Test Connection button.
  5. And you’re finished! To proceed, simply click the ‘Close’ button.

Put on your headset and start listening. Oculus Link is now available on your Quest 2 headset and is compatible with SteamVR. You can even browse the store first and then access your desktop from the headset if you prefer.

How to Install Quest 2 on SteamVR Games (Using FB Air Link)

Before we begin with the wireless method, keep in mind that because wireless connectivity is involved, it will not be as reliable as the wired method. Fortunately, Facebook offers its free Air Link service to users who want to play SteamVR games wirelessly. There are, however, some additional requirements that must be met before you begin. Remember the following:

A Router AC or AX with a 5GHz Network

Because wirelessly streaming content from the PC to the Oculus Quest 2 will be required, a fast Internet connection is required. Check that your router meets the most recent speed standards and has a 5GHz band selection. Furthermore, for the best possible connection, connect the router to your PC via Ethernet cable.

Oculus Quest 2: Fully Charged

The wired method not only provides a lag-free experience, but it also benefits users by constantly charging the headset during the process. However, if you choose to go wireless, the Quest 2 will operate on its own battery, which will only last so long. To get the best experience while playing SteamVR games wirelessly, make sure your Oculus Quest 2 is fully charged.

With the foregoing in mind, let’s get started with the wireless method.

Enable Air Link on your PC and start Quest 2.

Because Facebook Air Link is still considered an experimental feature, it must be enabled on both your PC and the Quest 2. We’ll start with PC. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. On your computer, open the Oculus app and select Settings from the left taskbar.
  2. Select the Beta tab from the next menu that appears.
  3. Toggle on Air Link from the list that appears by clicking on it once.

And you’re finished. Let us now proceed to the Oculus Quest 2.

On Quest 2, enable Air Link.

  1. Select ‘Quick Settings’ from the main menu.
  2. Tap the ‘Settings’ option in the upper right corner.
  3. Select ‘Air Link’ from the next menu under ‘Experimental Features’ and accept any notices.

Your PC and headset are now Facebook Air Link-ready. Let’s start by enabling the feature.

How to Enable Air Link in Oculus Quest 2

Let’s start with one last pairing and launching Facebook Air Link on the Quest 2. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Tap the ‘Quick Settings’ button from the main menu.
  2. Select ‘Oculus Air Link’ from the next menu that appears.
  3. Select your computer’s name and then select the ‘Pair’ button.
  4. When finished, click the ‘Launch’ button to begin Air Link on your Quest 2.

And you’ve arrived. You’ll be on the Oculus Link page, surrounded by a console. While you can explore this area, if you want to use SteamVR, simply remove your headset and follow the instructions in the Running SteamVR section above. As previously stated, lag may occur if your connection is unstable. However, in our experience, the experience is still positive, with games running smoothly. Depending on your needs, you can use Air Link or the wired method.

Virtual Desktop as an alternative to Air Link

While Facebook Air Link is a good option for wirelessly playing SteamVR games, there are other options. Virtual Desktop, a well-known third-party app, functions similarly to Air Link. Users can use Virtual Desktop to stream their PC onto the Quest 2 and control it from there. Users can also use Virtual Desktop to launch SteamVR or other VR games.

However, keep in mind that Virtual Desktop is a paid application that requires users to download both a PC client and an Oculus Quest 2 client. VD performance, like Air Link, will vary depending on your network and hardware configurations. However, if you still want to try it out, stay tuned because we have a complete virtual desktop guide on the way.
